Despite the busy work/family schedules of its membership, Second Shift remains committed to helping needy individuals and the community. Some of the causes Second Shift has been involved in are:
"Domestic Violence: Fundraiser For My Sister's Place, a battered women's shelter in Westchester County.
- "Children's Literacy and Quality Childcare”: A read-a-thon that raised more than $6K for Mount Kisco Day Care Center, a inter-generational day care center in Mt. Kisco, New York.
- " Bridging gaps between stay-at-home parents and parents who are pursuing careers" through joint venture between Second Shift and PTA.
- A project with A-Home, a non-profit organization that rehabilitates, builds and manages affordable rental housing in northern Westchester County, NY for older adults, disabled individuals and single parent families who, because of age, disability, or family status, cannot afford market rates. A-HOME promotes independent living with a network of community support. A coalition of 26 local civic and religious organizations supports A-HOME with funding and volunteers. A-HOME has renovated, or built and now operates 13 houses in Bedford Hills, Chappaqua, Croton Falls, Katonah, Mt. Kisco, Thornwood and South Salem, and manages one for the Blue Mountain Housing Development Corporation. Second Shift members outfitted the kitchens of 4 A-Home homes through an on-line registry at Bed, Bath and Beyond.
- Career Closet-Career Closet is a volunteer-based organization that provides business attire and other services for women who are seeing to advance their careers and improve family stability. Second Shift members collected over 125 suits and dresses to donate to Career Closet.
- Food Patch - Second Shift members collected educational games and toys for community after school programs.
- Sending care packages to our troops from Westchester County who are stationed in Iraq.
- At our February 2007 meetings (both Northern and Southern Westchester chapters), Second Shift ran a “Pajama Drive” and collected and delivered NEW, unused pajamas for children of all ages (infant-17) to The Pajama Program, a New York City-based, not-for-profit organization that provides new, warm pajamas (and books) to needy children, many who are waiting and hoping to be adopted. These are youngsters who may not know the comforts of a mother or father to tuck them into a cozy bed and read them a bedtime story. Too many have been abandoned, most deprived of any love at all.
